The historic place
Early history of the place is unknown. However, the early stages of the Christian era, Goa became the part of Satavahana Empire. This was followed by Kadamba, Chalukya and Silharas. Goa was a part of the Mauryan Empire. This was in the third century BC. The place even had a brief Muslim rule. However, the same was quickly overturned by the Vijayanagar Empire. With brief rule of other Indian dynasties, quickly foreign invasion occurred. Soon Dutch, French, English, Portuguese, etc. started vying for its excellent quality.
The long rule of Portuguese
In 1510, Portuguese conquered Goa. They left a considerable impression on the art, History, culture and architecture of the place. In 1961, the place finally attained independence from the long Portuguese rule. This was 14 years post the India attained freedom. Fontainhans in Panjim – it is a living museum of the Portuguese influence on the life and culture of the nation. The place has famous national parks like Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Molem Wildlife Sanctuary, etc.
